November/December Open Reading Period

During the months of November and December 2011, Steel Toe Books will be selecting at least two full-length poetry manuscripts via an open reading period. We will be reading two categories of poetry collections: those written by Kentucky writers and those written by poets who have previously published at least one full-length collection or chapbook. Please specify either Kentucky Writer or Previously-Published Poet on your cover letter or title page. There is no reading fee, but we ask everyone who submits a manuscript to support our press by purchasing one of our existing titles directly from us.

Guidelines for Kentucky Writers:

We consider you a Kentucky writer if you currently reside in Kentucky, if you have a degree from a college or university located in Kentucky, or if you are currently enrolled in a college degree program located in Kentucky (including one of the commonwealth’s three low-or-brief residency MFA programs). Send us your 48-80 page manuscript, along with a title page containing your contact information, an order form with one of our existing titles selected (available at http://www.steeltoebooks.com/place-an-order.html), along with a check for $14.50 ($12 for the book you’re ordering and $2.50 for shipping and handling).

Guidelines for Previously Published Poets:

Send us your 48-80 page manuscript, along with a title page containing your contact information, one copy of a published full-length collection or chapbook that you wrote, an order form with one of our existing titles selected (available at http://www.steeltoebooks.com/place-an-order.html), along with a check for $9.70 ($7.20 to cover the wholesale price of book you’re ordering and $2.50 for shipping and handling – since you’re sending us a copy of your previously-published book, we’re giving you a discount on one of our releases).

Update on Open Reading Period:

Many thanks to all who submitted during our November/December open reading period. We received over seventy manuscripts and are now hard at work taking it all in. By Valentine’s Day we hope to offer some love to at least two poets – one who has already published at least one book and another to a poet with significant ties to the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Check our website for an announcement in mid-February.
